 在西方占星学上，黄道12星座是宇宙方位的代名词，一个人出生时，各星体落入黄道上的位置，说明了一个人的先天性格及天赋。黄道12星座象征心理层面，反映出一个人行为的表现的方式。于是将黄道分成12个星座，称为黄道12星座。依次为白羊座、金牛座、双子座、巨蟹座、狮子座、处女座、天秤座、天蝎座、射手座、摩羯座、水瓶座、双鱼座。

  十二星座即黄道十二宫，是占星学描述太阳在天球上经过黄道的十二个区域，包括白羊座、金牛座、双子座、巨蟹座、狮子座、处女座、天秤座、天蝎座、射手座、摩羯座、水瓶座、双鱼座，虽然蛇夫座也被黄道经过，但不属占星学所使用的黄道十二宫之列，在占星学的黄道十二宫定义只是指在黄道带上十二个均分的区域，不同于天文学上的黄道星座。而经国际天文学联合会在1928年规范星座边界后，黄道中共有13个星座。由于岁差的关系，所以当前太阳经过的星座与现在占星学所用的黄道十二宫的日期已不一致。

古代为了要方便在航海时辨别方位与观测天象，於是将散布在天上的星星运用想像力把它们连结起来，有一半是在古时候就已命名了，其命名的方式有依照古文明的神话与形状的附会。另一半是近代才命名，经常用航海的仪器来命名。在古代因地域的不同，所以"连连看"的方式也就不一样！而21世纪世界已统一星座图为将天空划分88区域88个星座。
