古斯塔夫·多尔的插图灰姑娘的形象可以上溯到很早的时期。希腊历史学家斯特拉波曾在公元前1世纪记叙了一位嫁到埃及的希腊少女洛多庇斯的故事，这被认为是《灰姑娘》故事的最早版本。洛多庇斯当时正在溪水边洗衣服，突然一只鹰飞过将她的鞋子攫去并让鞋子掉在了身在孟斐斯城的法老的脚下。
